It’s not ever too early to start teaching kids to clean up behind themselves! #1 Make it a fun for them. Make it a game or a challenge. You can put on a kitchen timer. You can even buy them a cleaning apron or turn on a clean up song. Order a “kids clean-up kit from Amazon.” #2 Join in! Set the timer, let them know what you need. Go clear the dishwasher or switch the laundry while they are cleaning. #3 Be Specific. Give them a lot of small jobs rather than blanket statements like clean up your toys. Instead say, “I need you to pick up all the blocks on the living room floor. #4 Give specific and intentional praise while they are cleaning up. Not empty praise. Call out the specific behavior that you see and use “I noticed” statements. For example, I noticed that you stayed focused and put away all the barbies. Thank you. The living room floor is clean, thank you. #5 When they are younger/toddler age and you are first introducing cleaning up after themselves, I don’t recommend forcing them to clean up. It backfires and turns into them melting down. You’re also creating a negative association with cleaning. Ask them to clean up and if they don’t, then show them how. You are modeling the appropriate way to clean. They will see you and start mimicking you and after a while. Sing while you do and make it appear fun. You may be thinking “with this approach, I’ll be cleaning up after them forever.” If you start doing this with them early on, as they get older 3, 4, 5. They will already be prepared to clean up behind themselves. #6 Kids naturally mimic the behaviors they see most often. Toddlers want to be helpful. They will do as you do. They want to help wash dishes, fold laundry, vacuum, and clean up spills. When they offer to help, I know it’s more work for you to let them help, but do it. Encourage that behavior don’t discourage it. Help make cleaning fun!
