People always love hiking 14ers with their dogs. But what are the issues you should consider before you get on the trail with your dog? Watch and learn some of the Leave No Trace practices you should follow to ensure your dog has a safe hike and it does not cause harm to the unique, ground-dwelling wildlife found on the 14ers. CFI's biggest concern with off-least dogs is conflicts with marmots, pikas, chipmunks, ptarmigans and other ground-dwelling alpine wildlife. Staff and volunteers have encountered instances in which off-leash dogs have chased down and killed pikas, an animal already under threat due to climate change. Even if they are not caught, the stress from a dog attack can make it difficult for these animals to store food for the long, cold winter and increases the probability that the animal will not survive the winter. Don't forget that your dog may also be at risk on some peaks--especially where mountain goats are common. We have encountered situations where dogs have been head butted or gored by mountain goats. Plan ahead and make it a great day for you, your dog, and everyone else hiking on the 14ers when you go.
