O Real Gabinete foi criado em 1837 por um grupo de imigrantes portugueses para estreitar os laços culturais com o Brasil. Foi aberto ao público geral em 1900 e, hoje, é a maior biblioteca de obras portuguesas fora do país, com livros de todas as áreas do saber. O Real Gabinete Português de Leitura é uma instituição sem fins lucrativos, e seu objetivo é promover a leitura e a cultura em língua portuguesa. Além de sua vasta coleção de livros, a biblioteca também abriga exposições, palestras e outras atividades culturais. O Real Gabinete está aberto à visitação em dias úteis, de 10h às 17h, com entrada gratuita. Às segundas, costuma receber um público maior que a média.
