Last time I had mentioned that prevention is better than cure for stroke. More than treating the stroke after getting it, it is extremely important to avoid getting a stroke. Then how do we prevent the stroke? That is what I would be talking about now. It is very important information because stroke is the second most common cause of death, and the most common cause of morbidity in the country. That is, in the entire world, in India as well, the highest risk of morbidity is caused by stroke because even those who have survived a stroke cannot return to their original condition. As a result of that, their quality of life will be greatly affected. Therefore stroke has to be prevented. Let us discuss the ways in which stroke can be prevented. I had already mentioned the risk factors of stroke. That is what we are going to assess. As mentioned earlier, hypertension or Blood Pressure, Sugar and cholesterol, these three have to be maintained within limits. BP should neither be too high nor too low. As much as possible, normal BP has to be maintained. Similarly the sugar levels fluctuations too have to be prevented. You should get checked by the diabetologist. Sugar levels have to be periodically checked and maintained. Cholesterol levels, those who have sugar and BP their cholesterol levels will also fluctuate. So the cholesterol level should also be checked and if the cholesterol level is maintained at the optimum level, three major risk factors are prevented by us. Beyond this, what should we do? I had spoken about lifestyle modifications. So those who are smoking or those with smoking habits, should let go of the habit. Alcoholism has to be completely stopped. Thirdly, lifestyle; Obesity, sedentary life. That is an underestimated risk factor. We normally ignore that. We should not do that. So what are the ways to overcome obesity? Moderate exercises. That does not mean that you have to jump or run a marathon. Something that everyone should do practically is that in a week, even if walking daily isn't possible 3 to 4 days in a week, 3 to 4 kilometres per day walking is necessary. The reason walking is so important is that, when you walk automatically blood circulation will improve and stroke can be prevented, obesity can be reduced, the sedentary lifestyle is changed. By being active and dynamic, you are helping your body by avoiding a big risk factor. Therefore it is important. Third: Hydration. Always make sure you are sufficiently hydrated. When hydration is insufficient and you get dehydrated, the chance for the blood to thicken increases. Blood flow is similar to the flow of a fluid in a pipe. There is a difference between water flowing through a pipe and oil flowing through a pipe. It is viscosity. Water flows freely whereas oil flows in a slow and sluggish manner. Therefore, whether you maintain your blood like water or like oil is important. Those with normal sugar, BP and Cholesterol levels and those with proper hydration, blood flows freely like water in the blood vessel. For those with high sugar, high cholesterol and when they are dehydrated blood would flow slowly like oil in the blood vessel. Then it sticks easily resulting in a block, causing a stroke. This applies to the heart and to the brain too. If you avoid all these risk factors, you will be able to lead a very very healthy lifestyle.
