Imagine, if you will, you're a low-life loser living on the fringes of society. No matter how hard you try to move on with your life, your past is constantly finding ways of catching up to you. You decide to go take a walk to clear your conscience, leaving the dark and drab place you call home behind. As you walk the dark shadowy alleys of 41th Noirvember Street, you let the sounds of the city take hold... This is a 2-hour film noir-themed ambience video featuring some early 20th century jazz tunes and snippets from a few noir films. It builds upon ideas I'd explored on 66-Minute Graveyard Ambience and 2-Hour Reflection City Ambience. The video is named after the unofficial global month-long holiday celebrated in November by cinephiles focusing on the film noir genre. Film noir itself is a cinematic term used primarily to describe a number of stylish Hollywood crime dramas of the 1940s and 1950s, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Awashed with a unique low-key, monochromatic visual style that has roots in German expressionist cinematography, these films derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Great Depression. The footage was filmed downtown at around 8 or 9 PM at night. I specifically chose these locations because it reminded me of the opening city scene in Sweet Smell of Success (1957). I then applied a monochrome filter over the footage. I was very keen on achieving the chiaroscuro look of many a film noir so I played around with shadows and contrasts. Finally, I slowed down the footage to create a series of mostly static continuous shots. Influenced by Brian Eno's ambient video paintings, the images slowly move forward, creating an immersive time-delay atmosphere. Originally shot in 16:9, the video is presented in the 4:3 format. The video was originally going to be accompanied with a synth and Mellotron-driven score intended to be similar to the track “Space Lion“ from the Cowboy Bebop OST, but I was unsatisfied with the results so I discarded it. I then decided to structure the video around a series of jazz and blues numbers from the likes of Bessie Smith and James P. Johnson, digitally processed and altered with echo and tremolo effects. The intent was to make it sound like you were listening to these songs on an old timey radio. I was influenced by The Caretaker's practice of sampling and editing big band records. Interspersed between the songs are audio snippets of several public domain film noirs like Scarlet Street (1945), Detour (1945), and The Big Combo (1955). I also added a previously unused soundscape built out of several versions of 1-Hour Highway Ambience to create the illusion of a bustling urban cityscape. This video is dedicated to my late aunt, who passed around this time back in 2011 from cancer.
