Pakistan is staring at a severe fuel crisis as tensions in West Asia disrupt global energy supply routes. According to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, the country currently has petrol and diesel stocks that can last only about 28 days. Crude oil reserves are estimated to last just 10 days, while liquefied petroleum gas supplies could run out in around 15 days if the crisis persists. The situation has worsened after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced restrictions on vessels from the United States, Israel, Europe and their Western allies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, carries nearly one-fifth of all oil transported by sea globally, making it a crucial artery for the global energy trade. With supplies under threat, the Shehbaz Sharif government is considering emergency measures similar to those used during the Covid-19 pandemic. These include mandatory work-from-home policies, online classes in educational institutions and ride-sharing initiatives to cut fuel consumption. Authorities are also exploring weekly petrol price revisions and compensation mechanisms for oil companies facing higher insurance and import premiums.
