This week MSAS welcomed Dr Anke Arden-Arentsen who told us how to use the oldest stars in the Milky Way to investigate how it was formed. Anke started by explaining how the early universe came into being and the nature of galaxies. She then explained how the size of stars relates to their age and how big stars will only exist for tens of millions of years whilst smaller stars can last for hundreds of billions. Going on to how earlier stars have very few elements in their makeup, Anke showed us how she has investigated how the galaxy has absorbed stars over its history.
