Dickson Chan plays the hymn 'Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Come to Us' on the 1929 Hill, Norman & Beard organ of St Stephen's Anglican Church, Willoughby. In the late 1950s, a number of English clergyman and organists - one of whom was Patrick Appleford (1925-2018) teamed up to form The 20th Century Church Light Music Group. Sharing a view that church music was becoming increasingly out of touch, the Group members sought to write new music that that would appeal to 'ordinary folk' (in contrast with music that might be produced by the pop industry). 'Thirty 20th Century Hymn Tunes' from 1960 was the first of its publications contained some hymns that have endured, including Appleford's 'Lord Jesus, Christ, You Have Come to Us,' for which he wrote both words and music in around 1958. Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us, you are one with us, Mary’s son; cleansing our souls from all their sin, pouring your love and goodness in, Jesus our love for you we sing, living Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us, born as one of us, Mary’s son; led out to die on Calvary, risen from death to set us free, living Lord Jesus, help us see you are Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, I would come to you, live my life for you, Son of God; all your commands I know are true, your many gifts will make me new, into my life your power breaks through, living Lord.
