This simulation shows the impact of a 3.0cm PzGr. H HVAP-T being fired from a German Zerstörer 45 self-propelled anti-aircraft (SPAA) at a range of 0.33KM, targeting the hull side of a US M4A2 Sherman equipped with additional ammo rack plate. The extra hull armour shown here was part of a quick-fix program intended to upgrade earlier-production dry-stowage Shermans that were already stockpiled in England and elsewhere. The goal was to apply lessons learned from Tunisia and Italy. This included a series of hull flank armour plates designed to provide limited additional protection to the vulnerable dry ammunition storage areas. The 25 mm plate could absorb much of the kinetic energy from a 30 mm round, making the job of the side armour significantly easier. Without this extra ammo rack plate, an incoming round would retain its full penetrating potential and could easily reach the ammunition. Of course, a high-caliber round would have no problem breaking through the plate and sending the Sherman’s turret skyward. Interestingly, it was also suggested that the additional armour plate gave the enemy a clear aiming point, since they too knew the ammunition was stored in that area.
