LeAnn learned this series of vocal warm-ups from Sudhanshu Sharma, a wonderful classical Indian singing teacher based in Delhi who teaches and gives retreats all over the world. She leads these toning exercises as a regular practice where she lives at Ängsbacka Course and Festival Center in Sweden. This video was made on September 7, 2024 in the Sound Sanctuary during the Embodied Sound Festival. Special thanks to Annett, the only person visible in the full circle of people whose voices are part of this recording. www.sudhanshusharma.org www.angsbacka.com Here is a step-by-step guide to the practice in this video: We begin with three deep breaths We tone "mmmmm" together seven times We tone "ha" together seven times, feeling the energy move in a vertical line upwards from the earth, through our bodies and out our heads to the stars (on this one, open your mouth wide as if you're biting into an apple) *We tone "na" together seven times, feeling the energy move downwards in a vertical line from the stars, through our crown chakras, through our bodies and down into the earth (also with a wide open mouth) We tone "hri" seven times, with our mouths wide, as in a smile, and the energy moving horizontally from our heads We tone "hnu" seven times, focused on the point in the middle of our heads, the "third eye" (if you like, you can turn your eyes inwards) We tone "ong" seven times, feeling the sound radiate out in a sphere from the point; ong, rather than om, activates the soft palate at the top of the back of our mouths, and vibrates the nasal passages for activation of the pineal and pituitary glands (I have learned that many ancient traditions used "ong" rather than "om") We tone the whole series of ha, na, hri, hnu, ong seven times We tone "an" seven times, holding the "n" sound to clear out any cobwebs in the back of the head We tone "hum" seven times, holding the "m" sound to clear out cobwebs in the front of the head We tone "ghee" seven times, focused on our heart and with the same wide mouth as "hri" We tone "ghuu" seven times, focused on our third eye and feeling the resonance of the heart and the brain come into coherence At the end of each toning session, we usually come into a circle holding hands, and we tone for a few moments more. Contact LeAnn directly if you'd like to practice with us in a live toning via Zoom.
