Recorded May, 2024 for the 5th annual Chicago songSLAM, presented by Fourth Coast Ensemble and Sparks & Wiry Cries (@sparkswirycries) Robbie Ellis, composer & pianist Ashlee Hardgrave, vocalist "Siren Song" Sailor, oh sailor, take heed, take heed. Sailor, oh sailor, hear my siren song. Sailor, don’t go working on a cruise ship. Ah! Ah! Sailor, steer clear now. It’s not that great. You’ll see the Bahamas, which gets old pretty quickly, And your bosses force you to smile on a cruise ship. Ah! Ah! It’s true, you’ll be warmer than a tanker in the Arctic. It’s true that you probably won’t meet Somali pirates. It’s true, the Leviathan and Kraken are not actually real. But fearsome monsters abound! Terrifying demons! Their names are Chuck and Janice from Long Island. Ah! And their three kids. Ah! Sailor, oh sailor, hark ye the sea nymphs. Younglings shriek on the pool deck. The Old Man of the Sea dilly-dallies, indecisive at the buffet. “The roast chicken or the veal schnitzel? Honey, they’ve got roast chicken and veal schnitzel tonight. Which one do I want... [improvise further tediousness]” Come on, Pop Pop! Choosing shouldn’t take three minutes. Ah! Just pick one! Sailor, hold fast now. Watch ye your footsteps, As there be teenagers Congregating in the stairwells, Socialising in the stairwells. So much awkward adolescent flirting in the stairwells. Take heart, they be too young for the Ultimate Drinks Package. Ah! They smell of Axe. Ah! Sailor, oh sailor, hear my siren song. Sailor, oh sailor, cruise ships aren’t for you. Avast ye! Avast ye! Waste not your life! Waste not your life In Margaritaville! Text by Robbie Ellis
