Do liver detox products actually work? "Liver detox" supplements, juices, and cleanses are a booming industry—generating nearly $39 million annually from just the top 20 Amazon products alone—but what does the medical evidence actually say? [1] In this video, two practicing physicians review the scientific evidence behind popular liver detoxification practices. We discuss what the liver actually does, whether detox diets or supplements provide any real benefit, and why these products continue to be widely marketed despite a lack of clinical evidence. What the evidence shows: Major gastroenterology societies—including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and American Gastroenterological Association (AGA)—do not recommend liver detox cleanses or supplements in their clinical practice guidelines [2-4] A 2025 analysis of the top-selling liver supplements found that scientific evidence supporting their efficacy in liver health was "limited and inconclusive," despite bold marketing claims about "eliminating toxins" and "enhancing liver function" [1] A 2015 critical review concluded that "no randomised controlled trials have been conducted to assess the effectiveness of commercial detox diets in humans" [5] The hidden risks: Herbal and dietary supplements now account for 20% of hepatotoxicity cases in the United States [2-3] Supplements can cause severe liver injury with variable clinical presentations—ironically, some patients have developed acute liver injury specifically from "liver cleansing" products Common culprits include green tea extract, multi-ingredient products, and various herbal formulations In this discussion we cover: • How the liver's natural detoxification system actually works—without needing supplements • The scientific evidence (or lack thereof) behind liver detox products • Why symptoms attributed to "toxins" are often misunderstood • The real risks of unregulated supplements causing liver damage • What physicians actually recommend to protect liver health: weight loss (7-10% body weight), Mediterranean diet, regular physical activity (150-300 minutes/week), and alcohol moderation If you've ever wondered whether liver detox products are science or marketing, this evidence-based conversation will help you understand what actually works for liver health.
