In early 1944, while most fighter pilots stayed high above Europe, one P-51 Mustang pilot took the war to the ground — literally. This is the story of James “Jim” Goodson, the P-51 pilot the Germans feared most. Flying at tree-top level, Goodson carried out some of the most aggressive low-altitude strafing attacks of the air war, destroying 15 German aircraft on their own airfields. While other pilots avoided such missions due to intense flak and the vulnerability of the P-51’s liquid-cooled Merlin engine, Goodson deliberately pushed the Mustang to its absolute limits — sometimes flying so low that ground crews later found grass and debris lodged in the aircraft. This documentary follows James “Jim” Goodson from the moment war entered his life in 1939 to the low-level attacks that made his name feared across German airfields. It traces how a young survivor of the SS Athenia sinking crossed borders to join the fight, learned his craft in multiple air forces, and eventually pushed the P-51 Mustang into a role few pilots ever dared attempt. Flying at tree-top level, Goodson turned precision and judgment into weapons—crippling the Luftwaffe on the ground and redefining what the Mustang could do when flown at the edge of survival. This is not a story about altitude records or kill claims. It is a story about how wars are won close to the ground, by pilots willing to see the battlefield differently. #WW2 #ww2documentary #p51mustang #WW2fighterpilot
