(23 Jan 1995) English/Nat Ireland's top Catholic bishop has called for the British to forgive "the wrongs and hurts" that have been committed by the Irish in the past. Cardinal Cahal Daly was speaking at Canterbury Cathedral yesterday (Sunday) - the centre of the Anglican church. It has been four centuries since an Irish bishop last preached at Canterbury Cathedral, the heart of the Church of England. The special service marked the recent progress towards peace in Northern Ireland, notably the ceasefires by paramilitary organisations. The service, which drew a crowd of over a thousand, was part of an annual week of prayer for church unity. Cardinal Daly referred to the recent visit to Ireland by George Carey, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the spiritual leader of the Church of England. Daly reminded the congregation that Carey had asked the Irish people to forgive past British wrongdoings, and asked that the British do the same. SOUNDBITE: "I wish to ask forgiveness from the people of this land for the wrongs and the hurts inflicted by Irish people on the people of this country on many occasions during that shared history and particularly in the past 25 years." SUPER CAPTION: Cardinal Cahal Daly Whilst stressing that he did not approve of their acts, Daly said that paramilitary prisoners had played their part in the peace process and asked for prisoners on the mainland to be transferred nearer to home if they so desired. Amongst those listening in the congregation was the British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Sir Patrick Mayhew. SOUNDBITE: "Prison regimes generally have a direct bearing on the evolving peace process. I hope that the Irish government will take the necessary steps to ratify the European convention on the transfer or prisoners and will cooperate with the British government in facilitating the phased transfer of prisoners nearer their homes." SUPER CAPTION: Cardinal Cahal Daly Daly urged that party politics should not be allowed to stand in the way of the peace process. He spoke of the fear on both sides of the community that there could still be a shift back towards conflict.
