Andrew Grove: From Refugee to CEO of Intel | The Success Story Andrew Grove moved from being a refugee, escaping the Soviet Union and Nazi troops, to becoming the CEO and Chairman of Intel, growing their revenue from $2,672 to $197billion during his time at Intel. Today Intel boasts as the Biggest manufacturers of Microchip semiconductors in terms of revenue and market size with over 70% market share. This number is huge considering other big players in the industry like Samsung electronics, AMD, Nvidia, and others. But none of them rings the bell as Intel! Perhaps Samsung comes close due to its mobile device dominance. Some of the top names that have done business with intel include Dell which accounts for 17% of Intel’s revenues, Lenovo which accounts for 12%, and HP inc, which accounts for 10%. Apple used to also be a big customer for Intel but later moved to manufacture their microchips. This move still didn’t affect Intel’s dominance in the market, Oh maybe a little, but Intel is still king in the Microchip industry. Founded in July 1968 by two American engineers, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, Intel commenced operations with an investment of $2.5 million. An investment from Arthur Rock famous for coining the word Venture Capital. Andrew Grove came into the picture because he worked together with Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore at Fairchild Semiconductor. Robert Noyce was a general manager at Fairchild, while Gordon Moore was the Head of Research and Development. So immediately after Robert and Gordon received funding to start their company, their first move was to employ their former colleagues at Fairchild who were intelligent. Andrew Grove was first on that list. He would join the revolutionary team that built Intel to become a force to reckon with! I know by now you must be thinking how a refugee even got to work in Fairchild. Well, remember the saying, when life throws a lemon at you, make lemonade out of it.
