World TB Day 2024: The Unsung "Black Angels" of Sea View TB Sanitorium
Celebrate World TB Day with Maria Smilios, the author of "The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis." Her historical narrative tells the story of hope, strength, and the dedication of the black nurses on the frontline of TB care at a NY City sanitorium during the time of Jim Crow racism and new TB drug discoveries (1930s-'50s). David Ashkin, MD, will be facilitating. Learn about these nurses' role in helping to find the cure for TB (INH) and hear of their familiar issues of nursing shortages, lack of funding, and patient stigma. During this time, public officials deemed that no one would leave this TB hospital alive, and yet the nurses persevered. SNTC recognizes nurses as the backbone of TB care now and this heartwarming story reminds us of their extraordinary importance to patients back then too.
