On paper, it goes by the low-key name “Naval Special Warfare Development Group.” This team is the Navy’s elite warriors under Jsoc. Inside Jsoc, they’re often called Task Force Blue. Devgru is one of 5 Tier 1 special mission units in the U.S. military. These are the folks who get tapped for the highest-stakes and ultra-classified missions. So today, we’re gonna break down how this legendary team is set up. Devgru is broken down into color-coded line squadrons. Red, Gold, Blue and Silver are assault squadrons. Then there’s Black Squadron, which handles all the IRS stuff—Intel, Recon, Surveillance. Gray Squadron is all about getting folks in and out; they run mobility teams, transport ops, and have their own crew of divers. Backing up these operators is a mix of support crew — cryptologists, comms techs, EOD, dog handlers, and Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron tagging in. And just to put things in perspective, according to a Government Accountability Office report, in the 2014 fiscal year, Devgru had 1,787 authorized positions —1,342 were military, and 445 were civilian. That’s a big crew for a unit that supposedly doesn’t exist. And safe to say those numbers have gotten even bigger over the years.
