With the approach of Halloween and the opening of the winter season with Samhain on the 1st of November, we are invited to enter a world of imagination and story. There is a natural drawing in to the hearth of tradition and a turning inward as the nights grow dark and the days grow colder. In today's video, I share an excerpt from Joe O Domhnaill of Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway, in which he describes what storytelling was like in the old days. He has much to teach us about how to spend this season in good company, creativity, and a sense of warm belonging. You have all been so generous with your comments: thank you! I read and treasure every one. This week, please let us know: 1. How will you make this a season of imagination, of stories, talking and listening, and of devotion to YOUR creativity and art? 2. What will you undertake? I mentioned that for me that will be harping and writing; what about you? WORDS & PHRASES & SOURCE Samhain = 1 November and also the Irish name for November itself Oíche Shamhna = Halloween Scéal = story Scéalaí = storyteller Seanchas = lore Seanchaí = teller of lore and stories Bailitheoir = a collector (of stories in this case) Scéal ó Shamhain go Bealtaine = A story from the 1st of November to the 1st of May Lá ‘le Bríde = St. Brigit’s Day on the 1st of February Excerpt from “An Scéalaíocht sa tSeanaimsir” by Joe Ó Domhnaill in I mBéal na Farraige: Scéalta agus seanchas faoi chúrsaí feamainne ó bhéal na ndaoine, edited by Heinrich Becker (1997); translated by Kate Chadbourne.
