The VACTERL association is an acronym used to describe a group of anomalies that tend to co-occur. It affects multiple parts of the body and thus is associated with a wide variety of manifestations. V stands for vertebral anomalies (e.g., fused or misshaped vertebrae) A stands for anal atresia, which may be accompanied by lower genitourinary abnormalities. C stands for cardiovascular abnormalities, the most common of which are ventricular and atrial septal defects. Tetralogy of Fallot may also occur. T stands for tracheoesophageal fistula, while… E stands for oesophageal atresia R stands for renal anomalies (e.g. renal dysplasia/aplasia, vesiculoureteral reflux) L stands for limb anomalies (e.g., radial aplasia) Individuals with VACTERL association typically have three or more of the aforementioned features. Facial asymmetry and Fanconi anemia are just two other features that may occur, but are not represented by the acronym.
