greetings! Today I wanted to talk to you about creating your own seed banks. This is the perfect time of year to seek out seeds that are on clearance. Stores do not like to keep them around because they are considered a seasonal item. In fact some stores, will throw seeds away and mark them off as a loss instead of allowing people to purchase them. This is the truth! I have had great luck at places like Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Target and the best luck of all at Dollar General. The latter of which will clear out seed for around a penny a pack this time of year. Last year I was able to get over 300 packs of seeds for a penny each. I also had one of my viewers tell me that they sought out the Dollar General in her area and asked about the seeds. The manager told her they had already been pulled from the floor and were ready to be thrown away. The manager proceeded to give her bags of the seeds which otherwise would have ended up in the garbage! If you are into the preparedness lifestyle, you, no doubt have seen or even purchased one or two or more, emergency seed banks. I have two of them. One of veggie seeds and one of herb and medicinal seeds. I purchased them when they were on a very good sale. However, there is no reason to spend that kind of money on something you can easily prepare yourself! On a budget this will be an easy task to complete and will give you peace of mind should you ever need seeds and they aren't available in stores. I am a collector of seeds, in general. I am always drawn to the seed section during planting season and I never met a seed catalog I didn't pine over. So as it would be, I have lots of seeds that I want to plant, but don't always plant them. Seed banks are the answer. They help you store for another day. They help you plant a garden next year, at this year's prices, they are a hedge against inflation and they are just plain smart. If you are a gardener, or if you want to be a gardener or if you know someone who is, then seed banking is for you! There are two schools of thought on the seed issue. Seed have an expiration date, and some people believe that they will not be viable past that date. The other school of thought is that seeds, when kept under the proper conditions, will last a very long time. Seeds were found in the ancient pyramids that actually germinated! Strains that were thought to be extinct were once again growing and thriving. All because the good old Egyptians had the forethought to put seeds in the tombs so that their dead would be able to plant them in the afterlife. Well, their dead maybe not, but us, you bet! Seeds can easily be collected and stored in plastic shoe boxes, cardboard boxes or even in coffee cans! Make sure you place them in a dark, cool, dry place, away from heat and humidity which could seriously shorten their life and viability. You should store a variety of seeds for a variety of fruits, veggies, herbs and flowers that you love! That way when planting season rolls around again, you can just take your seed bank down from it's shelf and decide what you should grow this year! Seed banking is also a great way to store valuable goods should something happen with our economy. Seeds could be considered a good barter item and it could help you to trade them for other goods or services should you need too. I'm not saying anything is going to happen, but you never know and it's better to be prepared then caught with your pants around your ankles if you know what I mean! So that's my little lesson on seed banking! I hope you try it and I hope you love it! Happy Planting!
