Sen. Kamala Harris let her face — eye rolls, smirking, scoffs and all — do all the talking during the vice presidential debate Wednesday night, but some experts believe it could cost her with voters. Pollster Frank Luntz said Vice President Mike Pence was the clear winner of the 90-minute debate, which the Democratic vice presidential nominee forgot to bring her poker face to. “You can’t give Mike credit for winning the debate. You have to give Kamala responsibility for losing it,” Luntz said Thursday on CNBC. “Because of the tone, because of the demeanor … the smirking and the reactions to it. He said the 15 undecided voters from eight battleground states he polled weren’t won over by the former California prosecutor’s performance. “The complaint about Kamala Harris was that she was abrasive and condescending,” Luntz told Fox News. He said, “Harris’ reactions to Pence — the smiling, the smirking, the scowling” — left the viewers “angrier” with her performance than Pence’s, despite them not appreciating the vice president going over his allotted time. “Voters do not like it when candidates run long, and when they run long every time, they think that’s an example of being undisciplined and unfocused,” Luntz said. “However, they were more agitated with Kamala’s presentation than they were with Mike Pence.” Meanwhile, Patti Wood, a body language expert, told InStyle Harris’ dismissive touch was the right note to strike. “It’s fascinating that Kamala uses smiles to respond to Pence when he is giving false information,” Wood told the magazine. “Smiling and shaking her head in disbelief are the softest ways for her to respond. For those viewers who were expecting her to look angry, they are seeing her maintain her calm.” Wood said Harris — who her two stepchildren call “Momala” — channeled her maternal instinct when frequently cut off by Pence. “When Senator Harris was interrupted again and again, her big smile, tilted head, and firm, low volume voice was that of a mother correcting her toddler,” Wood said. “She could have gotten angry; we have seen her really angry in congressional hearings. Instead, she was controlled and measured.” Nadia E. Brown, an associate professor of political science and African American studies at Purdue University, told the New York Times that Harris’s facial expressions shouldn’t be the key takeaway from the debate. “Her facial expressions and the eye rolls and neck movements were quintessential Black woman — she was signaling, ‘Don’t start,’” Brown told the newspaper. “However, what came out of her mouth was what people tuned in to the debate to hear. She gave clear policy contrasts, and that’s really what the debate should be about.” The Times noted research on the double standard of certain behavior — men are seen as assertive versus women who are viewed as aggressive. That double standard is harsher for women of color, like Harris, according to the Times. “With the tightrope she’s walking, she’s definitely not going to make everybody happy,” Amanda Hunter, research and communications director at the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, told the paper. But, “it’s so important that a woman candidate stand up for herself in a debate, and that can display strength to voters,” Hunter added. Harris’s facial expressions were fresh fodder for Twitter. “Kamala’s face when Pence is talking is the same face my mother made whenever I was explaining why I didn’t make curfew,” wrote @cmonstah, with a screenshot of Harris’ icy glare. “SNL” star Chris Redd tweeted, “Kamala Harris has the best ‘I can’t believe this bulls–t right HERE’ face I have ever seen.” Vox reporter Alex Abad-Santos’ meme of Harris alongside Thor, Dakota Johnson and Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones” — with the caption “same energy” — went viral. But viewers across the aisle weren’t as amused. Conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly noted, “At this point the debate is a draw. Vice President Pence is being too nice. Senator Harris is articulate but comes across as arrogant and the facial expressions are hurting her.” David Dudenhoefer, the Republican who is seeking Rep.
