Nothing Sacred (1937), directed by William A. Wellman, is a screwball comedy with a bite in it, a film that turns pity into a public event and makes the media machine look both ridiculous and oddly seductive. With Carole Lombard and Fredric March at the centre, it’s all speed and misdirection, the sort of story where a “good cause” can be manufactured in the space of a headline, and everyone still gets to feel virtuous for buying in. All essays are spoiler-light and designed to work even if you haven’t seen the film, with a clear recap. This is Episode Two of Season Two, my run of screwball comedies. In this essay I look at how Nothing Sacred turns sympathy into spectacle, how performance passes for sincerity when the crowd wants to be moved, and how a small-town mix-up becomes big-city theatre once it’s given a deadline.
