According to Fazello, the origin would instead derive from the ancient Greek pachys , which means "abundant", "fertile". There are other theories that trace its meaning back to Pachys Oinos , which means "land abundant with wine", or, referring to the island of Capo Passero, to Pacheia Nesos , or "island with a large circumference". The promontory of Pachino was formed in the Cretaceous period (more than 70 million years ago).
