Welcome to our channel NKC Insight. The International Day of Light (IDL) is an annual celebration, global initiative that provides a focal point for the continued appreciation of light. IDL aims to raise awareness of the critical role light-based technologies play in our lives, elevating science, technology, art, and culture to help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace. This day marks the anniversary of first successful operation of laser by engineer and physicist Theodore Maiman on 16 May 1960. International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies in 2015, which saw more than 13,000 activities implemented in 147 countries, the Executive Board of UNESCO, at its 200th session, established 16 May of every year to be observed as International Day of Light. Thus, the first International Day of Light was celebrated at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 16 May 2018. IDL contributes to building new bridges between education and scientific disciplines. Worldwide community-driven actions in science outreach and education it offers The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) an opportunity to fulfill its mission of promoting international cooperation in basic sciences and STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). An International Year of Light provide an enduring follow-up of the achievements by raising the profile of science and technology globally and highlighting its applications for stimulating education, improving quality of life worldwide, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. An International Day of Light will contribute to build new bridges between scientific disciplines, education and the art, responding to the critical need for interdisciplinary science, and improved dialogue between citizens, scientists, decision makers, industry leaders and non-governmental organisations. An International Day of Light will encourage worldwide community-driven actions in science outreach and education. Light is used in many applications to illuminate spaces such as homes and offices. UV lights are used in photo therapy to treat certain illnesses. Ultraviolet energy is used to eradicate bacteria and viruses from the air and water. Light is used in optical fiber networks, which helps to transmit information. Lights are essential for safety, such as headlights for vehicles and traffic lights. They are used in many household items, such as television sets, microwaves, and cell phones.
