Find more events at the Dahdaleh Institute: https://www.yorku.ca/dighr/events/ Israel’s assault on Gaza has devastated food, water, and health systems, striking at the very essentials of life that sustain Gaza’s population. This panel will bring together experts in food systems, WASH, and health to examine the evidence of a genocidal pattern; explore how and why the international community has allowed it to continue; and consider the implications for global health and humanitarian practice. The session aims to impel reflection and action on what researchers and concerned citizens can do in response—within the York community and in the broader Canadian context. Panelist Profiles Dr. Ahmed Abu Shaban is a visiting professor at York University, affiliated with both the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) and the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change (EUC). He is the dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at Al-Azhar University in Gaza. His work focuses on food systems, and climate justice, with particular emphasis on how war, blockade, and displacement shape agricultural production and food security in Gaza. Dr. Reem Abu Shomar is a public health and water expert working at the intersection of the humanitarian–development nexus. She holds a PhD in water technology, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance in water supplies, and a Master’s degree in public health. Dr. Abu Shomar has worked with national and international agencies and has extensive experience in water and public health. Dr. Al Barayka has served in diverse healthcare environments, including long-term pediatric care at the MOH, humanitarian work with Doctors Without Borders, and public health research with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency clinics. He is skilled in patient assessment, case management, child protection, and clinical data collection. Dr Al Barayka’s training includes traumainformed care, suicide prevention, opioid dependency treatment, and advanced first aid. He is former Medical Doctor at Al Awda Hospital in Gaza with MSF’s reconstructive surgery project.
