One of the many curiosities of 1920s jazz is the large concentration of fine slap bass players in the Pacific Northwest during the latter half of the decade. Starting around 1926 with “Slim” Jim Taft of Herman Kenin’s popular Portland band, bassists from Seattle to Eugene were employing a New Orleans slap bass technique, heavily influenced by the records featuring Steve Brown with the Jean Goldkette Orchestra such as “Dinah” and “Hoosier Sweetheart.” This set of 10 of the finest slap bass recordings from the Pacific Northwest features sides by Kenin as well as the Seattle based Vic Meyers band and the University of Oregon based George McMurphy’s “Kollege Knights” Orchestra. It is fascinating to hear examples of this strange regional style of a regional style all together. The arrangements are often Challis-inspired (naturally), but also have elements of the Red Nichols New York chamber jazz school of the day, all giving the bass room to shine. So sit back and enjoy this thumpin' and bumpin' set of red hot bass heavy territory band sides. This video is dedicated to the Gould Family of Pennsylvania.
