What do Cannabis and Lemons have in common? The terpene limonene. Terpenes are volatile aromatic compounds that help give plants their characteristic smell. The cool thing about terpenes is that they are biologically active - meaning they interact with our bodies to produce effects that we can feel. Limonene is responsible for the scent of citrus fruits. It has been shown to have antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects. Johns Hopkins performed a double-blind, placebo controlled study evaluating the effects of limonene on the subjective experience of THC. The findings indicated that the co-administration of d-limonene with THC was associated with a significant reduction in self-reported feelings of anxiety and paranoia compared to when THC was administered alone. This anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect was observed to be dose-dependent, meaning that higher doses of limonene resulted in a greater reduction in anxiety. For individuals who experience anxiety with THC, this study suggests that cannabis strains or products with a higher concentration of limonene may be a preferable option. Spindle, T. R., Zamarripa, C. A., Russo, E. B., Pollak, L., Bigelow, G. E., Filer, W., & Vandrey, R. (2024). Vaporized D-limonene selectively mitigates the acute anxiogenic effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol in healthy adults who intermittently use cannabis.
