Olympics and the India Story: Nalin Mehta, Deepa Malik, Devendra Jhajharia and Boria Majumdar Nalin Mehta is Executive Editor of the Times of India (online). He is an award-winning social scientist, journalist and author who has taught and held senior research positions at universities and international institutions in Switzerland, Singapore, Australia and India. His books include Behind a Billion Screens: What Television Tells Us About Modern India, longlisted for Business Book of the Year, Tata Literary Live 2015, and India on Television: How Satellite News Channels Changed the Ways We Think and Act, which won the 2008 Asian Publishing Award, 2008. His new book, Dreams of a Billion: India and the Olympics Games, co-written with Boria Majumdar, will be published in 2020. Deepa Malik is the winner of five President of India awards, four Limca World Records, three international awards, 68 national and state medals and 23 international medals. A Padma Shri, Khel Ratna and Arjuna awardee, Dr. Malik is India’s first paraplegic woman biker, swimmer, rallyist and the country’s first ever female Paralympic medalist, enabling people with disabilities through her foundation Wheeling Happiness. Devendra Jhajharia is an Indian Paralympic javelin thrower. He is the first Indian Paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics, he won his first gold in the javelin throw at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, becoming only the second gold medalist at the Paralympics for his country. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, he won a second gold medal in the same event, bettering his previous record. He is also the recipient of numerous national awards. Boria Majumdar, a Rhodes scholar, is the author of multiple books on Indian sport and its history. His most recent work, Eleven Gods and a Billion Indians, was awarded the Rabindra Puraskar for Literature in 2018. He is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire and Adjunct Professor, Monash University, Melbourne. He also serves as Consulting Editor, Sports, for the India Today Group. India’s Olympic Story traces India's involvement in the world's most renowned sporting event to the First World War, based on newly-found documents at the Public Records Office in London. This session, featuring the landmark book's authors Nalin Mehta and Boria Majumdar alongside athletes Deepa Malik, Devendra Jhajharia, will delve into the stories behind some of our sporting stars who became national icons and their tales of triumph and indomitable will. It will encapsulate India's journey told through the prism of sport.
