Thiruvathira is a traditional festival celebrated mainly by women in Kerala, observed on the Thiruvathira star in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December–January). It is closely associated with Lord Shiva and symbolizes marital harmony, well-being, and feminine energy. On this day, women wear traditional attire (usually white kasavu sarees), perform the graceful Thiruvathira Kali dance in a circle, and sing folk songs that celebrate womanhood and devotion throughout the night. Homes are decorated, and a special vegetarian dish called Thiruvathira Puzhukku is prepared. Also Arrowroot Payasam is prepared. At midnight, there is a ritual performed called 'Paathirapoo choodal' where the God is worshipped and flowers are offered to the deity. Consumption of tender coconut water and chewing beetelnut leaves are included as mandatory rituals in this festival The festival highlights solidarity among women, cultural heritage, and the joy of togetherness.
