Syrian Rebels Heavy Fighting Around Barzeh District

Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad continued shelling the Barzeh district in Damascus in order to take control of the district. The Syrian army had been targeting militant positions in the district with airstrikes and artillery, followed by heavy fighting between members of the FSA and the Syrian army. Barzeh is a municipality and a neighborhood of Damascus in Syria. It has been in militant hands for quite a long time especially in the hands of the Liwaa Al-Islam brigade. Due to disagreements of leadership and other rebel fractions joining together the brigade is now called Jaysh Al-Islam(Army of God). The faction which is one of the largest rebel factions in the Syrian Civil War has been reported to have close ties with more extremist groups such as a alliance with Jabhat Al-Nusra. The Syrian Army has been laying siege for about 6 months on the rebel-held neighborhood. During this time the neighborhood has suffered a lot mainly due the fighting and blocking roads to the neighborhood. The Syrian army is making more gains everyday in this neighborhood but the Syrian rebels are committed to push back the army in order to keep control over the strategic neighborhood. Several videos have been posted on social networking sites which include rebels blowing up building after they abandoned the posts in Barzeh. The Syrian army says that this is not the first time the rebels have blown up buildings after the Syrian army managed to take over their posts. The Syrian army claims that their main purpose is to destroy Syria, thus the reason to blow up buildings. Activist have claimed that these buildings were blown up because they a advantage for the Syrian army once the militants leave. Mainly due weapons and favorable sniper positions.
