🔥 Over nearly 70 years of spaceflight, around 10,000 intact satellites and rocket bodies have reentered Earth’s atmosphere — with many more yet to come 🌍🛰️. Despite how common this is, we still don’t fully understand what happens inside a satellite during its final, fiery moments. 🚀 To change this, ESA is preparing the Draco mission (Destructive Reentry Assessment Container Object), designed to collect unique, real-world data from inside a satellite as it breaks apart during atmospheric reentry 🔥📡. 🛰️ Planned for launch in 2027, Draco will include a specially designed survivable capsule that will transmit critical telemetry just hours after launch, providing unprecedented insight into the breakup process. ♻️ Draco is a key part of ESA’s Zero Debris approach, which aims to stop the creation of new space debris by 2030. Future spacecraft will be “designed for demise” — engineered to disintegrate safely, cleanly, and completely at the end of their missions. 🌫️ Understanding satellite reentries is also vital for studying their impact on Earth’s atmosphere. While ground tests help, real-life reentry data has been missing — until now. 🛡️ Data from Draco will improve reentry modelling, enhance design-for-demise technologies, and help maintain Europe’s leadership in sustainable spaceflight. 👉 Interested in space safety, debris reduction, and sustainable spaceflight? ⭐ Subscribe to the channel, 👍 like the video, and 🔔 turn on notifications for more behind-the-scenes space missions! 🎥 Credit: European Space Agency (ESA) ⚠️ Notice: This video includes third-party content.
