The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians. First Clement is one of the oldest Christian documents outside the New Testament canon! It is from a single hand, comprising 65 chapters, written from a body of Christ followers in Rome to those in Corinth. The epistle was publicly read from time to time in Corinth, and by the 4th century this usage had spread to other churches. It was included in the 5th century Codex Alexandrinus, which contained the entire Old and New Testaments. It was included with the Gospel of John in the fragmentary early Greek and Akhmimic Coptic papyrus designated Papyrus 6. First Clement is listed as canonical in "Canon 85" of the Canons of the Apostles, showing that First Clement had canonical rank in at least some regions of early Christendom. Ibn Khaldun also mentions it as part of the New Testament, suggesting that the book may have been in wide and accepted use in either 14th century Spain or Egypt. ------------------------ THIS IS LIBRIVOX RECORDING AND IS IN PUBLIC DOMAIN. NARRATED BY C.J. PLOGUE ------------------ The epistle is dated to as early as the sixties of the first century for a few reasons in his Jesus: the Temple cult is mentioned in the present tense (pp. 38-39), Peter and Paul are mentioned as of "our generation", and the letter seemed to have been written during a persecution, perhaps that of Nero. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_E... https://www.britannica.com/topic/Firs... --------------------- INTERESTING QUOTES: ON ENOCH: "Let us take (for instance) Enoch, who, being found righteous in obedience, was translated, and death was never known to happen to him." --- 1 Clement 9 NATIONS ARE DIVIDED AFTER THE GOD'S ANGELS: "For so it is written, When the Most High divided the nations, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the nations, according to the number of his angels; his people Jacob became the portion of the Lord, and Israel the lot of his inheritance." --- 1 Clement 13 : 7 ON SODOM: "On account of his hospitality and godliness, Lot was saved out of Sodom when all the country round was punished by means of fire and brimstone, the Lord thus making it manifest that He does not forsake those that hope in Him, but gives up such as depart from Him to punishment and torture." --- 1 Clement 11 NOT EVERY LEADER SHOULD BE OBEYED: "It is right and holy therefore, men and brethren, rather to obey God than to follow those who, through pride and sedition, have become the leaders of a detestable emulation. For we shall incur no slight injury, but rather great danger, if we rashly yield ourselves to the inclinations of men who aim at exciting strife and tumults, so as to draw us away from what is good." --- 1 Clement 14 ON HUMILITY OF CHRIST: "Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Sceptre of the majesty of God, did not come in the pomp of pride or arrogance, although He might have done so, but in a lowly condition, as the Holy Spirit had declared regarding Him." ---- 1 Clement 16 ON MARTYRDOM OF PAUL AND PETER: "Peter, through unrighteous envy, endured not one or two, but numerous labours; and when he had at length suffered martyrdom, departed to the place of glory due to him. Owing to envy, Paul also obtained the reward of patient endurance, after being seven times thrown into captivity, compelled to flee, and stoned. After preaching both in the east and west, he gained the illustrious reputation due to his faith, having taught righteousness to the whole world, and come to the extreme limit of the west, and suffered martyrdom under the prefects. Thus was he removed from the world, and went into the holy place, having proved himself a striking example of patience." --- 1 Clement 5 IMPOSSIBLE TO ESCAPE THE VENGEANCE OF GOD IF ONE CONTINUES IN SIN: "Seeing then all things are seen and heard by God; let us fear him, and let us lay aside our wicked works which proceed from ill desires; that through his mercy we may be delivered from the condemnation to come. For whither can any of us flee from his mighty hand? Or what world shall receive any of those who run away from him? For thus saith the Scripture in a certain place, Whither shall I flee from thy Spirit, or where shall I hide myself from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there; if I shall go to the utmost part of the earth, there is thy right hand: If I shall make my bed in the deep, thy Spirit is there. Whither then shall any one go; or whither shall he run from him that comprehends all things?" --- 1 Clement 13 : 1-5 -------------------- READ ONLINE - https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101... http://www.earlychristianwritings.com... #ClementEpistles #ApocryphaMX
