In this video I show in detail the construction of mizzen mast of the San Felipe model ship. A Spanish Galleon reborn. Hello, fellow shipbuilders! Welcome back to another construction video. In this episode, I will specifically show you how I make and attach the shrouds for the foremast. 🔹 What will I cover? How I attach the shrouds to the channels. How the lanyards run through the deadeyes and back again. How I secure the deadeyes to the channels. I don’t use any special measuring tools, just a method that works best for me. A double shroud takes me about 30 minutes to complete, so it’s a time-consuming process. I have also started working on the ratlines, but that will be covered in the next video. 💡 According to Lennarth Petersson’s book, this is the correct way to create a deadeye assembly, ensuring the proper use of connecting ropes, lanyards, and secure attachment to the chainwales. However, at model scale, it’s almost impossible to replicate every detail perfectly. That’s why I use my own approach: 🔗 My Method for the Deadeye Assembly and Lanyards ✅ I create a larger seizing knot using the thinnest rope I have available. ✅ The lanyard is threaded through the deadeye holes in a zigzag pattern. ✅ On the final pass, I guide the lanyard through the space between the shroud and the deadeye using a needle. ✅ Then, I wrap the lanyard around the double rope above the first seizing. ✅ I add a second seizing, securing the double rope with two seizings: The first represents the smaller throat seizing. The second is made with the lanyard itself. What I don’t do is add the middle and end seizings described in the book, as they are too small and difficult to replicate at this scale. ⛓ Installing the Shrouds 🔹 Step 1: The shrouds are installed in pairs, starting with the foremost pair. 🔹 Step 2: Each shroud is looped over the masthead and brought back down. 🔹 Step 3: The shrouds are secured using knots and seizings to keep them properly aligned. 🔹 Step 4: The lanyards are adjusted to achieve the correct tension. 🔹 Step 5: The shrouds are installed alternately: First on the starboard side, then the next pair on the port side. This prevents the mast from being pulled out of alignment. 🚢 What’s Next? Now that the shrouds are in place, in the next video, I will continue working on the ratlines, further reinforcing the rigging and completing the structure. 🔔 Did you find this explanation helpful?
