2007 Ford Escape Engine Noise

I first noticed the noise on my drive home from work, a fairly loud rattling or knocking sound.. I drove it straight home, total trip is 28 miles. I have let my oil go about 8000 miles without a change, too much I know. I drained the oil for over an hour, then a friend gave me a ride to the auto parts store and I bought 1L of SAE 5W20 Pennzoil motor oil and a Puralator PureONE oil filter. I replaced the filter and the oil, using the entire 1L. I poured the used oil into the liter container, and it measured a little over 2 quarts of oil. I noticed tiny bits in the drain pan, and small, shiny flakes also. This is the sound that the engine continues to make, Same as before, maybe not quite as loud as before. Any ideas?
