Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is thought to affect 0.5–1% of the dog population. However, it seems that this prevalence is only a rough calculation and the number of dogs at risk of developing CKD is probably higher. An early diagnosis is essential because there is no cure for CKD; the clinical objective is to reduce its progression. The most used diagnostic marker is creatinine level, but unfortunately, it has many limitations. SDMA is a much more sensitive biomarker of glomerular filtration and adds additional information when used in conjunction with creatinine. The detection of proteinuria is also important for an early diagnosis. A urinalysis, therefore, is crucial in the diagnosis of CKD, and simple urine test strips are ideal for screening purposes. The treatment of CKD should always be tailored to each individual dog. In IRIS stages 1 and 2, the vet should focus on reducing its progression, while the clinical signs should also be treated in IRIS 3. By IRIS 4, however, it is time to start focusing on improving the patient’s quality of life.
