Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever (2001) Neal Morse - Keyboards, Backing Vocals Roine Stolt - Guitars, Vocals Mike Portnoy - Drums, Vocals Pete Trewavas - Bass, Vocals M.P.: In keeping with the TA tradition of covering a classic Prog Epic on each release("In Held Twas In I" on SMPTe and "Firth of Fifth" on Live America), this time around we tackled the Pink Floyd classic "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". I remember Roine (maybe half jokingly) suggesting "Shine On" when we were discussing cover songs to do for our Live US dates in 2000. That suggestion of his stuck in the back of my mind, and when it came time to do something this time around, I threw it back onto the table. Originally I was thinking of suggesting doing the more obscure "Echoes" (which I've always wanted to cover), but in the end I think "Shine On" is a stronger track overall and a more suitable choice for a TA cover. It was a fun opportunity for Roine, Pete and myself to trade off the lead vocals on the verses, Neal playing the role of the soulful female backing vocalist and then all 4 of us harmonizing the Title lines. I also think the guitar solo spots for this song are tailor made for Roine's style. The opening solo could easily be mistaken for David Gilmour if you close your eyes! R.S.: I can still remember hearing this track for the first time. I was on tour with my band Kaipa in the mid-seventies, every night after the concerts we were invited to some of the organizers, they were treated with some tea or maybe wine and someone put on the new Floyd record that we had not heard yet. They turned down the light and I can still recall the magic that floated out of the stereo speakers. Everything was perfect, one moment in time when music is magic!!!
