JELLY ROLL MORTON was a self described inventor of jazz. And while some would say his claims were exaggerated, it really is not far from the truth. Morton certainly was a formative voice – as a pianist and as one of the first to actually write the music down. His famous Library of Congress recordings, which were made by ALAN LOMAX in the late 1930s, are a powerful glimpse into the beginnings of the music. Perhaps there is no more revealing testament of the wild times and this unexpected, revolutionary music that sprouted from the New Orleans tenderloin district. Many of these “mini-podcasts” are from these fascinating recordings. Here, Morton plays piano, frequently sings and sometimes discusses the music he is playing, much of which was first played at the beginning of the previous century in the “sporting houses” or bordellos of New Orleans.
