Before that there was the Austria-Hungarian Dual Monarchy. That monarchy was no more. On 12 November 1918 the German-Austrian National Assembly proclaimed the Republic of Deutsch-Österreich. Yet, the Treaty of Saint Germain (1919) forbade a union with Germany and thus the First Austrian Republic was born.
