These patients come from a very wide geographic catchment area. I see them in the emergency department, take care of them in the trauma bay, followed by operative care, and then care in the intensive care unit. I love general surgery in that it gives me the opportunity to fix anatomic problems. Most people don’t realize that general surgeons are also responsible for the general medical care of their patients, before and after surgery. One has to be not only a good technician, but also very good at treating a multitude of diseases. The patients who I operate on very often have a surgical problem, and then some other medical problem that I have to take care of as well. It requires comprehensive knowledge. Some people say the general surgeon is the most complete physician in the hospital. I found that attractive. I feel very passionate about the idea of trying to make surgical procedures as safe as they possibly can be. This means it’s critical to build a team around me who are all committed to the same goal. Which is getting the patient through the operative procedure with the best, most comfortable and safest experience.
