When Hakka Cuisine of Shenzhen’s Longgang Meets Indonesian Soto Ayam: Comforted by Familiar Flavors Amid the grey brick walls and tiled roofs of Gankeng Ancient Town in Shenzhen’s Longgang District, a cultural encounter through flavors quietly unfolds. Dr. Ben Perkasa Drajat, Consul General of Indonesia in Guangzhou, together with his spouse Mrs. Harwita Sari Drajat, joins host Crystal Li for a stroll through this Hakka village with a history of more than 300 years, experiencing its distinctive architecture and rich cultural heritage. Gathered around a table filled with steaming dishes, they sample authentic Hakka dishes, including the iconic salt-baked chicken. Shaped by migration and passed down through generations, these flavors have matured over time, offering comfort in their familiar aroma — perhaps this is the true meaning of “finding peace through flavor.” At Dr. Drajat’s residence, a table of Indonesian flavors awaits. One of the most common items on Indonesian tables is shrimp crackers, enjoyed not only as a snack but also as a delicious accompaniment to meals. In a fragrant bowl of Soto Ayam (Indonesian chicken soup), shrimp crackers can even be added directly to the soup, creating an extra layer of texture. When Hakka cuisine meets Indonesian soup on the same table, flavors travel across geographical boundaries, and cultures connect naturally through every bite.
