Today I’m moving a 39ft Meridian from its slip at Pier 77 to NE Taylor Boat Works for repairs. We’ve had some really windy days recently, so we’ve been pushing out this job for a little over 2 weeks hoping for a less windy day since getting into NE Taylor with a boat this size is hard enough without wind due to the restricted channel and a sharp 90-degree turn at the end. Today was supposed to be that day, and it started out that way, but the wind started to pick up on my way there, and by the time we arrived at NE Taylor, the wind had almost doubled its forecasted speed. Everything was going smoothly until…well, it wasn’t…but luckily we were going slow and didn’t cause any damage, so it all worked out. We’ve been waiting more than two weeks for the perfect calm day because getting into NE Taylor with a boat this size is already tricky — tight channel, shallow water, and a sharp 90-degree turn that demands total focus. This morning looked perfect: light breeze, smooth water, and a forecast that promised “easy conditions.” But, as any boater knows, forecasts are just polite suggestions. By the time we got halfway there, the wind started picking up… and by the time we reached the channel, it had doubled the forecasted speed. Everything was going fine — until it wasn’t. Just before making that final 90-degree turn, a sudden gust pushed the bow a little too far, and thunk — we made very gentle, totally unplanned contact with a piling. No damage, no harm, just a reminder that boats and wind have a complicated relationship. Thankfully, we were going slow, and nothing (or no one) got hurt. Just another reminder that on the water, the line between “routine” and “adventure” is about 10 knots of wind. So, all’s well that ends well… but let’s just say this one’s going in the “That Could’ve Gone Better” file. #ThatCouldveGoneBetter #BoatingAdventure #BoatDockingFail #WindyDayDocking #Meridian39 #BoatLife #BoatingMishap #FloridaBoating #CaptainLife #DockingInWind #BoatFails #RealBoatingMoments #TightMarinaDocking #BoatingVlog #BoatRepairYard #BoatingLessonsLearned #DockingGoneWrong #NoDamageJustPride #NETaylorBoatWorks #Pier77Sarasota
