(27 Nov 2014) Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha was given a ceremonial, red carpet welcome by his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung when he visited Hanoi on Thursday. Talks between the two leaders were intended to boost bilateral relations, and the two countries also signed a cultural agreement. Last month, Prayuth suggested elections in Thailand might not take place until 2016, although he had earlier set a target date of October 2015. Thailand has suffered from political instability since 2006, when an earlier military coup ousted then-Prime Minister Thaksin for alleged corruption, abuse of power and disrespect for the king. Supporters and opponents of Thaksin have since struggled to regain power, sometimes violently.
