Together, we can build a brighter future for Haitian youth. Help these amazing Haitian women rebuild their school by donating today http://bit.ly/TDGirls Sister Yannick is Headmistress of Mère Louise girls' primary school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Its buildings were destroyed in the 2010 earthquake, along with the other 2 schools that operate on a little oasis of land amid Haiti's downtown slums called Centre Rosalie Javouhey. This site also hosted weekend cookery classes to help local youths get skills for work; it operated a medical centre and is one of the few places where local children can play in open space, around trees and flowers. Many of the facilities were destroyed in the earthquake. School admissions are still partially suspended because of the lack of drinking water, toilets, classrooms, kitchen facilities and play space (currently covered by temporary one-storey buildings) for the demand. Thinking Development has been working with the Cluny Sisters, the teachers and the students since the disaster to help them design the permanent, sustainable, holistic reconstruction of this essential comunity space. As soon as we have funding, we are ready to construct phase 1 of safe and sustainable classrooms. This will mean over 1,250 girls, their teachers and staff will be able to attend, for the long term. Moreover, once the first prototype school is built, the plans will be available open source to the local authorities and other organisations looking to do long term, local and holistic post-disaster reconstruction.
