More than 90 years ago, the influential philosopher John Dewey asserted that “the odd notion that an artist does not think and a scientific enquirer does nothing else is the result of converting a difference of tempo and emphasis into a difference in kind” (1934). A good hundred years earlier, the equally famous Wilhelm von Humboldt decided to separate musicology, which he considered a discipline worthy of the University, from the training of composers and performers, which he relegated to Musikhochschulen (Music Schools or Conservatories). Now, we find ourselves in a situation where music creation, practice and research are under the same roof. I have referred in jest to this forced union of University and Conservatoire as an “arranged marriage” (the bride beautiful but penniless; the groom a bit dull but offering security). In reality, I believe that understanding and recognising the profound thought and studio time that goes into realizing creative works benefits both the processes of musical creation and performance and the quality and relevance of research in music. In this lecture, I will trace the fascinating developments in theory, policy and practice that have led us to where we are now, and argue that thinking about creativity and creative thinking can work in synergy for our artistic futures. Professor Huib Schippers Distinguished Changjiang Professor Huib Schippers is one of the world’s leading scholars on the crossroads of music education, artistic research, cultural diversity, and sustainability. In over three decades of leadership roles in arts and academia, he founded the World Music School in Amsterdam (1990-1996) and played a key role in realising the World Music & Dance Centre in Rotterdam (2001-2006). He was Founding Director of the innovative Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre (2003-2016) and Dean of Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (2009-2012). In this role, he became an important spokesperson and advocate for recognising artistic research, working with the Federal Government and the Australian Research Council to create an assessment framework that would value artistic research on an equal footing with research outputs in other formats and disciplines. He was the sole music expert in the first round of Excellence in Research Australia (2010), which transformed the Australian research landscape in the performing and creative arts. Later, Schippers served as Director/Curator of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (2016-2020), UC Regents’ Professor at UCLA (2022), and Visiting Professor at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing (2023). In 2024, he was awarded Changjiang Scholar, the highest distinction for an individual academic in China. From 2025, he leads the International Centre for Cultural Sustainability at Zhaoqing University in China. 5 September, 2025 Music Workshop
