Molarity and molality both tell you how much solute is in a mixture, but they use different measures. Molarity (symbol M) means the number of moles of solute divided by the volume of the solution in litres. You find moles by dividing the solute’s weight by its molecular mass, then divide by the total solution volume (in L). This is important when you work on colligative properties in your NCERT chemistry chapter. Molality (symbol m) also uses moles of solute, but divides by the mass of the solvent in kilograms instead of solution volume. So you still calculate moles the same way, but here you take the weight of just the solvent (in grams), convert it to kg, and divide. Because molality depends on mass, it doesn’t change with temperature, while molarity does.
