Drum cover of Don't Stop Believing by the band Journey, originally released as a single from their seventh studio album Escape released in 1981. / rhythmantic It became a number 9 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 on its original release. It is one of the top-selling catalog tracks in digital history. One of the most unique and creative of drum set groove patterns designed by the virtuoso drummer Steve Smith. The drumming starts at: 1:22 While most popular songs have a refrain that is repeated several times throughout the song, the true chorus to "Don't Stop Believin'" (as well as first mention of its title) is not heard until the end of the song with only 0:50 left. The song's writers designated the musically similar sections before the chorus as the "pre-chorus." The song's structure is: Introduction (instrumental) (0:00–0:21) Verse 1 (0:22–0:51) Instrumental (0:52–1:09) Verse 2 (half-length) (1:10–1:24) Pre-chorus 1 (1:25–1:57) Instrumental (1:58–2:05) Verse 3 (2:06–2:37) Pre-chorus 2 (2:38–3:08) Instrumental (chorus) (3:09–3:24) Chorus until fade (3:25–4:16) The song is played in the key of E major at a tempo of 120 beats per minute. The vocal range is E3–C#5. The chord progression, played by the piano in the introduction and continued throughout most of the song, is eight chords long, following a I-V-vi-IV-I-V-iii-IV progression. I triggered the Session kit from Native Instruments' Studio Drummer. A second drum track was generated using the MIDI file of my performance and used to trigger the Blackbird kit from Steven Slate Drums 4. This is my 2nd rendition, the first was performed many years ago when I first started uploading my covers onto You Tube, and it used a setting directly out of the Roland TD-12 module. This cover used a drumless backing song track.
