Shibu Soren was a founding member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a movement that fought for the creation of a separate state of Jharkhand from Bihar. His struggle was remarkable and eventually led to the formation of Jharkhand in 2000. However, his dream of serving as the state's full-term Chief Minister was thwarted three times. He was also chargesheeted in a bribery case, accused of accepting a bribe to help save the PV Narasimha Rao-led central government during a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha. In the end, all the accused, including Shibu Soren, were acquitted. Today, his son, Hemant Soren, leads a coalition government in Jharkhand.
