Meet Kit Koala – Australia’s FASD Mascot Kit is a non-gendered koala who helps children, families, and communities understand Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) through a lens of strength, compassion, and celebration of neurodiversity. This animation is grounded in the FASD Indigenous Framework, centering Aboriginal ways of knowing, being, and doing. It promotes healing-informed, strengths-based, and culturally responsive understanding of FASD. Kit champions the idea that neurodivergence is not a deficit, but a different way of thinking — one that deserves respect, inclusion, and love. Through storytelling, humour, and connection, this resource aims to reduce stigma and create a neuro-affirming Australia where families can live well with FASD. About this resource We’re thrilled to introduce Kit, Australia’s first FASD mascot! Kit stars in a new animated video developed by proud Palawa woman Nicole Hewlett, in collaboration with Carbal Medical Service Outreach Team and their Strong Mothers Group. This mob-made resource features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, music, and humour — including comedian Sean Choolburra. In the first episode, Kit embarks on a learning journey with family, exploring neurodevelopmental assessments and discovering their own strengths. Future episodes will introduce a possum with autism, a wallaby with ADHD, and a platypus with a creative combo of both — celebrating the diversity of neurodivergent experiences.
