Ben Rein, a PhD candidate at SUNY Buffalo with SUNY Distinguished Professor Dr. Zhen Yan, recounts the research he has conducted throughout the duration of his PhD as he successfully defends his thesis. Ben's research focuses on genetic risk factors for autism spectrum disorder, specifically deletions and duplications of the human 16p11.2 chromosomal region. He also has invested much time in the development of advanced behavioral assessments for measuring social deficits in mouse models of autism. His thesis title is: Synaptic and Molecular Mechanisms of 16p11.2 Copy Number Variations, and the Advancement of Behavioral Assays for Sociability in Mice. In addition to his thesis advisor, Dr. Fraser Sim, Dr. Malcolm Slaughter, and Dr. Pablo Paez also served on his thesis committee.
