Bridging Policy Gaps Through Tranformational Leadership

Patrick Ligami, Chairman of the Kakamega Miners’ Association and National Vice Chairman of Artisanal Small-Scale Miners (ASMAK), outlines the transformation of the mining sector through leadership and the support of Solidaridad’s Reclaim Sustainability! program. Ligami utilized his background in education to organize youth and address sector shortfalls. This led to the creation of ASMAK, a registered national body with active county branches in Kakamega, Migori, Narok, and Turkana. With Solidaridad’s assistance, the association has implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), a constitution, and specific policies regarding HR, finance, and elections to ensure professional governance. The organized leadership structure has enabled high-level engagement with the National Government and the National Mining Corporation (Namico). Ligami credits civil society partners like Solidaridad and Planet Gold for being at the frontline of establishing these essential structures.
